Fulton sees increase in H1N1 hospitalizations
FREE vaccinations available at county health centers and health fairs
Despite it being springtime, people continue to be exposed to the H1N1 flu virus. Fulton County Health Officials report an increase in the number of lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 flu hospitalizations. From March 1 – March 18, 2010, sixteen people have been hospitalized for treatment; fourteen were hospitalized during the month February 2010.
“In Fulton, we continue to closely monitor the number of reported H1N1 cases,” states Patrice A. Harris, M.D., Director of Fulton County Health Services. “Although it’s springtime, we encourage residents who have not taken the H1N1 vaccine, to do so. Vaccination is the best protection against the flu virus.”
Since January 2010, the number of lab confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in Fulton County have remained steady. In January, there were 37 cases; February - 39 cases and from March 1-18 - 33 cases were lab-confirmed.
Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing, sneezing or talking by people infected with the virus. To protect against the flu:
- Get VACCINATED
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Wash hands with warm water and soap
- Stay home with flu like symptoms
FREE H1N1 flu vaccinations are available at Fulton County health centers.

H1N1 VACCINE AVAILABILITY:
Beginning Wednesday, December 9, 2009, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will expanded the administration of the H1N1 vaccine to any resident wanting the protection offered by the vaccine. The H1N1 vaccine, both nasal spray and injectable versions, are free and are available at 8 Fulton County locations.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the increase in vaccine production has made it possible to distribute more vaccine nationwide in order to protect more people. People in the high priority groups continue to be encouraged to get vaccinated. The high priority groups are pregnant women; household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age; healthcare and emergency medical services personnel; all people from 6 months through 24 years of age; and persons aged 25 through 64 years who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.
Please Check back daily.
The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness has received notice to recall 800,000 doses of certain H1N1 vaccine lots for children. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specified vaccine lots are being recalled because their potency was found to be low.
The Department has assessed its vaccine supply and found that it did not receive nor distribute any H1N1 vaccine with the lot numbers listed by the CDC for recall. Some Fulton County residents received the H1N1 vaccine through private providers other than the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness. Residents who could have received the vaccine from recalled lots should note that the CDC has determined the H1N1 vaccine to be safe and has determined that there is no need to revaccinate persons who have been vaccinated from the affected lots.
